He launched the first Scrum team in 1993 and has shepherded its growth into almost every industry: finance, healthcare, higher education, and telecom.
Lighting Talk | The Heart of Scrum
Date: August 08, 2022 | Duration: 30 minutes
You know you are doing the Heart of Scrum, if the team has a potentially shippable increment of product at the end of a sprint. With this phrase as a headline, Dr. Jeff Sutherland will do the opening keynote.
Dr. Alistair Cockburn
Dr. Alistair Cockburn is one of the biggest stars on the celestial sphere of agile. He was voted one of the “The All-Time Top 150 i-Technology Heroes” in 2007 for his pioneering work in agile development and use cases. He co-created the Agile Manifesto, the Declaration of Inter-Dependence, the Agile Leadership Network and the International Consortium for Agile. He is an expert on agile development, use cases, process design, project management, and software architecture. His current focus is broadcasting the “heart of agile”. He is noted for entertaining and informative lectures and courses.
Lightning Talk | Heart of agile
Date: August 9, 2022 | Duration: 30 minutes
Collaborate, Deliver, Reflect and Improve – but on what, exactly? In this blitz version, Dr. Cockburn will present four key insights you need to make agile applicable in every industry and initiative.
Workshop | Heart of agile: Deliver!
Date: August 9, 2022 | Time: 1 pm – 4 pm
One of the insights we have obtained working with the Heart of Agile is that what one delivers into the world are Decisions, or rather, the concretizations of a bunch of decisions. Deliver-for-value and deliver-for-feedback are two of the three core elements of the imperative “Deliver!” in the Heart of Agile.
In this workshop, you will work with decisions, learning to see how they stack on top of each other, and learning to deliver less for more value and for better feedback … to make a better set of subsequent decisions.
Bring your laptop, or something that has a spreadsheet on it (programmers, you are welcome to program here), we will do the infamous “Elephant Carpaccio” exercise as part of the workshop. Besides learning why and how to deliver smaller sets of decisions, you will also walk away with a totally meaningless and useless certificate for “Heart of Agile: Deliver!” and a cute little sticker you can place on LinkedIn or emails so others know you survived this workshop with Alistair.
Masterclass – Day 1 | Heart of Agile
Date: August 10, 2022 | Time: 9 am to 5 pm
An exciting, informative day for all roles and at all levels, learning the Heart of Agile from one of the creators of the Agile movement.
- Just one, opening lecture, to catch you up on the state of the agile world right now.
- Two fast-moving activities that involve cooperating, developing, drawing, sharing, in short, being agile.
- Finally, a facilitated small-group discussion to work out what to do with all the insights from the day.
Set your organization’s expectations for agile adoption, create a shared experience for everyone to refer back to, ask difficult questions of one of the founders of the agile movement.
Level:
This workshop is for all roles, at all levels in the business, and all levels of experience with agile.
Who should attend:
This is a great workout day for an entire organization, from execs to receptionists, business to technical people, novices to experts (yes, even the experts will learn!). use it to level-set vocabulary and expectations for agile, to create a shared experience to refer back to, and create a new small improvement initiatives within the organization. General comment heard during this workshop is, “I wish my boss where here!”
Content of the day:
- Lecture: What is and what isn’t Agile development, the current state of the art.
- Timed Activity: A cooperative games of invention and communication.
- Timed Activity: Early business value, trimming the tail.
- Roundtable Discussion: Questions, answers and discussions from the day.
Course description:
This day is design as a 4-part workshop making sure very job position from Execs to Testers understand what is and what isn’t agile, and what the most trending themes are today. The value of this one-day workshop is to unify vocabulary, to make sure that everyone hears and heard the same story. Having the executives present alleviates the oft-heard complaint, “I wish my boss were here!”
Lecture: The opening lectures introduces key concepts and ideas needed to make use of modern agile development:
- Decisions flowing through an organization,
- Cooperative games of inventions and communication, “guest leadership”
- Disciplined learning,
- Craft,
- Trimming the tail on product development.
Communication exercise: In this 90-minute activity, the room is broken into teams of 5-7 people, each with specifiers and artists. The specifiers are given a drawing to have the artist produce, but they can only use simple-text messages to communicate. The teams go through this activity three times to learn how to reflect and improve during a project, how to spot impediments to communication and collaboration. This is a high-energy, highly enlightening activity.
Carpaccio (Programming) Exercise: in this 120-minutes activity, people work in pairs on a spreadsheet. The purpose of the exercise is to show how to slice business requests thinly enough to fit into any size of iteration or sprint. This is an intense exercise that shows business-side development-side people, both, how to work in the fine-grained style needed for modern agile development.
Facilitation discussion: In this final activity, discussion groups are formed, to discuss what parts of the agile concepts learned during the day will be easy to adopt, and which will be difficult. This section of the day serves so that every person can discuss how to take the day’s learning home.

The Challenge: neither the Scrum Guide nor the Scrum@Scale Guide mention the typical role of Project Managers. During an agile transformation, many organizations are confused as to what happens to these people and the office itself?
The Remedy: There are three possible trajectories for solving this problem, including the creation of an Agile Practice (Agile COE), that solve these issues: what Agile roles do PMs take? What about the responsibilities of a traditional PM? Who does that?
Why Attend: Hear exactly how Gary Dismukes, former Director of Engineering Project Management & current Director of Agile Transformation and Agile Architect at Dell Technology, eliminated his own job. You’ll also hear from Avi Schneier, Principal Consultant at Scrum Inc., about how he has evolved PMOs in large organizations that were unwilling to eliminate them.

So to use Scrum, using “The Art of the Possible”, there needs to be skilled ScrumMasters to take on this challenge.

- Teach the business how to maximize ROI and meet their objectives through Scrum

- Improve the productivity of the development team in any way possible
- Improve the engineering practices and tools so each increment of functionality is potentially shippable
Training
The training is done with many team exercises. Be prepared to do hard work. The training will give you the feeling of Scrum itself. The first day is dedicated to the Why and the Philosophy, the Meaning of Scrum. The second day hand over the tools and the How of Scrum. The specifiers are given a drawing to have the artist produce, but they can only use simple-text messages to communicate. The teams go through this activity three times to learn how to reflect and improve during a project, how to spot impediments to communication and collaboration. This is a high-energy, highly enlightening activity.
