How to Become a Scrum Master

Orlando Scrum Master

Interested in a career in scrum and curious about the process in becoming a certified scrum master? Well it might be much easier than you think! First of all, when considering a position in scrum you will want to familiarize yourself with scrum principles and the agile manifesto. You need to determine if this framework is a good fit as one of the main responsibilities of a scrum master is to facilitate scrum.

Secondly, you will want to review the scrum guide and read any other recommended literature prior to attending a CSM course. A CSM course is typically a 2 day class where you will discuss several scrum topics and practice them by engaging in group exercises. It is a hands on training where you get to assume the scrum master position and get a feel of working in a scrum setting.

Once you have completed your training you will be required to take a certification exam and score at least a 24 out of 35. You will have two attempts within a 90 day period and your certification lasts two years. To maintain your certification and to qualify for renewal after the two years you will be required to earn a minimum of 20 scrum education units (SEU’s). There are several different ways to earn SEU’s, for example by attending a regional scrum gathering, taking an additional training course or watching an online webinar to name a few. Overall, becoming a scrum master is very simple and will mostly require your commitment and interest in scrum.
